Week # 3: Political Ads

Using the Political Adswebsite
pick a political add to analyze.  Explain why you chose that particular add, what you like/dislike about it, and how it compares/contrasts to other ads you have viewed.

  1. I chose the Women Voters add for Eisenhower of the 1956 election. I really liked this add because it showed women of all different ages and occupations and allowed them to discuss why they were voting for Eisenhower. It was interesting to me to see why they were voting for Eisenhower. Many of the women discussed how they liked him as a person, and not always for what he stood for as a presidential candidate.

Throughout this ad, it targets the homemaker. It discusses what the woman was “thinking about” at that time. These things that they were thinking about were their family, their children and their children’s future, as well as the cost of living. This ad also suggests that the 54 million women voting are enough to determine the entire election. I found it really surprising to see an ad that allowed women to be viewed as powerful within the home as well as powerful enough to determine a presidential election.

It was also interesting to me to see how this ad reflected on how the women should vote for Eisenhower because of his wife. She was viewed as the “ideal first lady.” I guess I did not realize how important it was to have a first lady that was well like amongst the women of the country. Today, I feel like the people are more focused on the president himself rather than his wife.

This ad was different than the other ads I viewed because it targeted many women. It was not just for the college girl, or the mother, but for many women who were able to vote. It was also longer in time than a lot of the other ads that were targeting women. It allowed women to be viewed as influential, which I thought was interesting considering the time period.

  2. I chose the 1952 Eisenhower vs. Stevenson political television advertisement. What caught my attention to this ad was the fact that it was the "old school" way of persuading voters to vote for Eisenhower-cartoon style advertisement. "Ike for President" is repeated throughout the campaign commercial. "You like Ike, I like Ike, Everybody likes Ike!" The commercial is a "simple" way of getting people to vote for Eisenhower. It pokes fun at the democrats John, Steve, and Harriot(donkeys), and by showing that the representatives of Ike don't want them to "do the big job right." They'd rather see Eisenhower "do the job right."

"Hang out the banner, beat the drums, and we will take Ike to Washington." The elephant (republican icon) does all of the above. The people who support Ike, people of all different occupations, march along with the elephant with banners and balloons that say "Ike."

There is nothing I dislike about this commercial, other than its catchy repetitive slogans. I think it was repeated too much. Viewers understand the message to vote for Eisenhower. Other than that, the campaign commercial is a classic. it stands out to me the most than all the other political campaign commercials. Also, it was in black and white, which makes it more of a "classic" look.

  3. I chose the Ronald Reagan TV Ad: "Its morning in America again" from his political campaign for reelection for president in 1984. The reason I picked the ad is Reagan was the first President I can remember, and I remember watching this commercial when I was very young.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU-IBF8nwSY

The ad featured an assortment of images of Americans going to work with a calm, optimistic narrator suggesting all the improvements to the U.S. economy, since Reagan was elected in 1980, were due to his policies. Then the voice asked voters if they would want to return to the pre-Reagan policies of Democrats like his opponent Walter Mondale, who was the Vice President under Jimmy Carter. The ad is generally considered one of the best political campaign ads ever.

I liked how it made Reagan appears to take all the credit and give none to the Democrats, even though they were in control of Congress. Reagan was a very savvy politician and was able to use his talents from Hollywood to help him on the campaign trail.

I compared this ad with ones that RJF had in the 1968 primaries. RFK’s ads were very simple and down to earth. The ads on YouTube feature him speaking casually with citizens. RFK answers their questions without any of the typical politician gibberish. RFK’s ads today would feature him speaking, but not answering people’s questions. Reagan’s ad set a new precedent on political ads. He set the bar so high, that all politicians want to create ad so devastating to their opponents.

  4. I choose BILL CLINTON as my President candidate.

I watched several videos of him. Most of them were very inspirational, but the one that inspired me the most, was called “JOURNEY”.
This was his first commercial during the 1992
    Clinton vs Bush vs Perot.
It begins by Bill Clinton talking about his beginnings to becoming the President.
He begins by telling you how he was born in Hope Arkansas, just 3mounths after his father had passed away. Remembering the house that he had grew up in with his grandparents. Telling how they were not a well to do family, living on a very limited income.
He then goes on to tell of how as a young man in 1963, had went to Washington to meet President Kennedy, through the Boy's Nation Program. How honored and humbled he was that a young man of his back-ground was, able to meet the President. At this moment he knew that this was a great nation and that he could do Social Service work for the people, as he cares so deeply for humanity.
He then goes on to tell how he worked several part-time jobs, to put himself through Law School. By the time he graduated he didn't care if he made a lot of money. He just wanted to be able to go home and help the people of the town that he grew up in and loved so much.
As Arkansas Governor he was pleased that he was able to make such positive changes through, Health Care, & Education.
How given the opportunity of being President, he could make these things possible for all Americans. To help all Americans be able to have a piece of the American Dream.

This Video is very empowering and inspirational, as I find myself working, raising a family as a single mother, and how I am fortunate to have the opportunity to better myself and my life for my children, and their future. I thought how if I lived in another country; would this be possible?

  6. Just tried to post a comment, the site trew me off, and I lost the whole thing. Let's try again.
I liked 1984 Reagan's commercial about grizzly bear. The bear is lurking in the woods:powerful and silent;does not hurt anyone, but try to mess with it - it'll tear you up. Nowhere in the commercial the Soviet Union was mentioned, but everybody knew what the commercial was about. Reagan by that time made a reputation for himself as a fearless fighter with Communism, the commercial played in his favor. He won the elections in a landslide.
I don't like contemporary political ads, because some of them are way too personal. I remember one ad from the recent Democratic Congressional campaign in Delaware, where they accused their opponent (a woman in her forties) in practicing witchcraft. They were serious, too! She said she played with the idea when she was in high school, more than 25 years ago, and that she knows now that the idea was stupid. Even if someone commits a crime, there is "statute of limitation". Witchcraft is considered to be a cult, a religion of some kind; I thought Democrats were all for the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion.
But it's not important. The woman lost, and maybe she deserved it. I just think these personal attacks are like "low blows" in boxing: easy to deliver, but hard to recover from.
I also liked the "Love is in the air " commercial from the site (2008). I just think it's funny.

  7. I chose the “Carton Guy” ad from the Eisenhower 1956 campaign. The reason why I chose this campaign commercial is because it started off as a black and white cartoon that had a stressed looking little man that seemed as if he couldn’t make up his mind on who to vote for or what to believe. I just found it interesting because as soon as the commercial started the cartoon guy was bombarded with different views of important political decisions, I’m assuming, which indicated the political parties. I feel I can relate to this little man because I too try to keep up with the different views of the Presidential nominees but sometimes it seems to get too overwhelming by everything that is being said and done.

Another thing I really liked about this commercial was that it very briefly showed the cartoon guy and then started to capture the voices of realistic people. The spokesman was great at persuading me to vote for “Ike” because he talked about the positive qualities and ordinary features that Eisenhower had. Even though Eisenhower has accomplished many things in life throughout his leadership roles this commercial showed the amazing qualities he had as the “people’s” man. The people’s voices were heard and the reasons why they voted for him were great. I also noticed that not only were men speaking on his behalf but families, women, and African Americans were too, which was a big thing during that time.

I also couldn’t help to notice that while he captured the hearts of Americans he didn’t seem to trash talk on his opponent. Nowadays there seems to be just as many positive commercials in favor for the nominees as there are negative ones to make their opponents look bad, which I don’t think is right but I know will continue on.

  8. 1956 Eisenhower VS. Stevenson (Cartoon Guy)
I chose 1956 Eisenhower VS. Stevenson from his political campaigns. The reason I picked the ad is because different from other commercials. The creativity of this ad caught my attention and covey the audience to vote for him. The advertiser was very clever using one cartoon guy at the beginning that showing him confusing after been jam many different information such as unemployment, higher taxes trough newspaper, word of mouth and radio caused him to have headache and come up with many question like: Who is right? What is right? What should I believe? What are the facts? How can I tell? This is very clever because many voters are in the same boat like this cartoon since everybody tries to covey the audiences to vote for them as well as Eisenhower. Then the ad back up with a several people who supported Eisenhower to conveying the audiences to also vote for Eisenhower like this supporters.

  9. Out of all the commercials I have watched, I found myself attract to the many of the back old day commercials such the 1952 Eisenhower vs. Stevenson but it was already chosen. However, I found another animated advertisements that I like. The 1960 Kennedy vs. Nixon political television advertisement is the one I chose. The reason I picked this one because is a unique “old day” commercial that very hard to find in modern political commercial.

The animated cartoon commercial is very simple but also very creative way to get audience’s attention to use their vote and of course to vote for Kennedy. “Do you want a man for President who’s seasoned through and through, But not so dog-goned seasoned that he won’t try something new? A man who’s old enough to know, and young enough to do? Well, it’s up to you, it’s up to you, it’s strictly up to you.” The messages were easy to understand and straightforward to convey the audiences to vote for Kennedy because he would be a perfect President.

Honestly, there is nothing I don’t like about this commercial, other than it was repeated too much. However, is a good marketing plan because after hearing it for a while the audiences will remember Kennedy name. Once they remember his name, then they are more likely not forgetting to vote for him. Other than that, I strongly believe that modern political is too normal and plain with too much information to make that President looks good which is so opposite with the “old day” commercial. Although this advertisement is in black and white but is livelier than the colorful one that made me want watch it again and again.
